Katonah, New York Real Estate and Community Info
Welcome to the sleepy little town of Katonah, as of the last census of 2010 the population was 1,679. Katonah is one of the three hamlets in the Town of Bedford in northern Westchester County, New York. A hamlet is just a bit smaller then a village. Katonah features broad intersections, open green space, Victorian architecture, and a central business district adjacent to its railroad station.
History of Katonah - “Old Katonah” was the third settlement in this part of Westchester County in the first half of the nineteenth century, following the villages of Cherry Street and Whitlockville. The main streets of Old Katonah paralleled and crossed the railroad tracks where milk trains stopped to pick up produce for New York City sale. Named for the native Chieftain, Katonah. The land was purchased by English colonists. The small village was later relocated to its present land after the colonists created the Cross River Reservoir.
No renovations have been done, “Bedford is strict on zoning,” says Coldwell Banker’s Randy Faust. “It’s very popular,” says Faust. “Old renovated homes fly off the market.” With an average selling price of $998,335, the Katonah market has essentially returned to the pre-housing-bubble price points of 2008.
