Carnegie Hill

Welcome to Carnegie Hill. Once considered to be less stylish than other neighborhoods in the Upper East Side, Carnegie Hill is now one of the most sought after, prestigious residential areas in Manhattan. Located Uptown on the East Side, from 86th St. to 96th St and from 3rd Ave. to Central Park.

Named for the Andrew Carnegie Mansion, Carnegie Hill is the northern most affluent neighborhood in the Upper East Side, allowing it to maintain its historic integrity. The Carnegie Hill section of Manhattan is full of magnificent townhouses rarely for sale, has convenient access to Central Park.  Larger homes are pre-war apartments with six or seven rooms are known as the Classic Sixes or Classic Sevens. The light in the area remains generous though, as even these magnificent coops are usually modest in height.

Wood-framed houses and Neo-Gothic mansions border apartment buildings on the sunny, tree-lined avenues. On the side streets, brownstones with stoops are next to townhouses. Mansions have mostly been converted into offices for organizations, such as museums and universities. Many private schools make this neighborhood especially appealing to upper-class young families.

Even though there is high demand for real estate in this area, local groups wage legal battles against the construction of high-rises and condominium projects. These actions have kept Carnegie Hill as an oasis, with open streets and young trees next to old storefronts, making the neighborhood more desirable to residents who want something more personal and old-fashioned
