Brooklyn New York Real Estate and Community Information
From the name of the borough of New York City, originally derived from Dutch Breukelen meaning "broken land". It can also be viewed as a combination of BROOK and the popular name suffix "lyn".
In 1855 Williamsburg and Bushwick were annexed to it. Other communities were absorbed until the city of Brooklyn became conterminous with Kings county (created 1683). Brooklyn became a borough of New York City on January 1, 1898.

Brooklyn may have a tough reputation, but most of it is fairly safe, though visitors should always be careful walking around late at night on lightly trafficked streets. Stay alert and off the phone. Some high crime areas include East New York and Brownsville, neither of much interest to travelers.
